Confession time: I’m currently reading a book called The Bavarian Plum Cake Conspiracy . This is how I start my days, oftentimes with a cup of coffee in hand—and it’s got me craving real, homemade German plum cake before 8 am. Is that embarrassing? Maybe. But if a good book and plum cake don’t scream late summer perfection, I don’t know what does.

In this post, I’m sharing my favorite German plum cake recipes—from the classic yeast-based Zwetschgenkuchen to modern twists like plum cheesecake or even cinnamon plum muffins. Whether you’re looking for a plum cake German-style with streusel or an easy recipe without yeast, I’ve got you covered.

Zwetschgenkuchen (a.k.a. German plum cake) is a late summer staple in German kitchens. It’s traditionally made with Italian plums (Zwetschgen), which are tart, juicy, and perfect for baking. The beauty of a traditional German plum cakes lies in its simplicity—fluffy yeast dough or buttery shortbread crust, topped with plums and finished with a generous sprinkle of streusel. Or not. Whichever of these recipes you try, I promise they will all be easy.

How to Pick the Best Plums

Whether you’re baking a German plum cake with shortbread crust or yeast, it all starts with the fruit. Here’s what to look for at the store:

  • Choose deep blue or purple Italian plums (Zwetschgen)
  • A dusty, matte skin is a good sign (that’s natural bloom!)
  • Avoid super soft or wrinkled fruit
  • Gently press near the stem—it should be firm but not hard
  • Slightly underripe? Let them ripen for 1–2 days at room temp
