In the US or Canada, you&#8217;ll need to hunt a bit. Check the baking aisle, European specialty stores, or order online. I&#8217;ve had good luck with <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4qe466M\" rel=\"nofollow\">these from Amazon<\/a> \u2014 they come in a 1 lb bag which is perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They come whole, so you&#8217;ll need to grind them. I use a small food processor or coffee grinder. It takes 30 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recipe also calls for vanilla custard powder (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4qVUv5E\">like this<\/a>), which is very common in German baking but harder to find in North America. You can absolutely substitute cornstarch + vanilla extract \u2014 the recipe includes the conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And listen \u2014 once you have poppy seeds on hand, you can swap the apples for literally any seasonal fruit.
