Maple Walnut Cookies

I was tempted to name these Maple Walnut Cookies my ” Canadian Christmas Cookies ” as they are definitely the most Canadian thing on my Christmas Cookie plate.

In Germany we don´t bake a lot with walnuts – we prefer hazelnuts! Especially for our Christmas baking. Unfortunately almost every single member of my Canadian family is allergic to them! So hello Walnuts! And what do they go with best? Yes, with  good old maple sirup!

The truth is that the maple sirup is the only Canadian thing about them! The rest of the cookie is an all German whole wheat & butter cookie with a pinch of Christmas spices!

They are the bomb!!! Try them!

The recipe yields 70 cookies

300 g whole wheat flour
50 g roasted, chopped walnuts
1/2 tsp baking powder
200g butter

150 g powdered sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 pinch of salt
100g maple sirup

Für Deko und Glasur
200g walnuts, halved

powdered sugar and maple sirup

Roast the walnuts and chop them.

Mix flour with baking powder and add the rest of the ingredients until a dough forms.

Shape the dough into a ball and let rest in the fridge over night.
Roll the dough out to about half a centimeter and cut out the cookies. Transfer them to a cookie sheet and bake at 175 for 8-10 minutes!
While they are cooling you can mix some powdered sugar with maple sirup and glaze your cooled cookies.

Decorate your glazed cookies with the walnuts before the glaze hardens. Store the cookies in a tin – preferably in a cold room.

The cookies keep well for about 3 weeks.
